Arrive at Paro International Airport and drive to Thimphu (1.5 hrs). On the way, stop at Tamchhog Lhakhang and Iron Bridge, built by the 15th-century saint Thangtong Gyalpo. Drive across the scenic Dochula Pass (3,100m), adorned with 108 chortens and offering panoramic views of the Himalayas. Continue into the lush Punakha Valley to visit Punakha Dzong, a 17th-century fortress built at the confluence of the Phochhu and Mochhu rivers, considered one of Bhutan’s most stunning architectural masterpieces. Take a short walk to Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of fertility dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kunley, famously known as the “Divine Madman.” End the day with a walk across the Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of the longest in the country. Travel back to Paro (4 hrs). In the afternoon, visit Rinpung Dzong, the “Fortress of the Heap of Jewels,” known for its exquisite architecture and historical importance. Nearby, explore the National Museum (Ta Dzong), housed in a former watchtower and showcasing a rich collection of art, relics, and historical artifacts. Conclude the day with an evening stroll around Paro town, where traditional Bhutanese charm blends with modern life. Overnight in Paro.
Embark on the iconic hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), perched on a cliffside at 3,120m. This sacred site is where Guru Rinpoche is believed to have meditated in the 8th century, and it remains one of Bhutan’s most revered pilgrimage sites. After descending, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, dating back to the 7th century. Optionally, enjoy a traditional farmhouse visit with hot stone bath and local hospitality. Overnight in Paro.
