Arrive at Paro International Airport, where you’ll be greeted with a warm Bhutanese welcome. Drive to Thimphu, the charming capital of Bhutan (approx. 1.5 hrs). En route, visit Tamchhog Lhakhang and Iron Bridge, built in the 15th century by the great saint Thangtong Gyalpo. In Thimphu, marvel at the Buddha Dordenma, a towering statue overlooking the valley, symbolizing peace and happiness. Then visit the Memorial Chorten, a stupa built in memory of the 3rd King, where locals gather daily for prayer and circumambulation. Later, explore the majestic Tashichho Dzong, a grand fortress that houses the throne room and offices of the King as well as the central monastic body. Overnight in Thimphu.
After breakfast, take a short drive to the base of Cheri Monastery, founded in 1620 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Hike through a beautiful forest lined with prayer flags to reach this serene and historic monastery, a sacred site for meditation and spiritual retreat. Then visit Choki Traditional Art School is the only privately run charitable institute that provides traditional arts & crafts training to the underprivileged youths of Bhutan. The school provides free tuition, food and lodging facility and promotes the rich cultural heritage of Bhutan. Later enjoy the short hike to Wangditse Lhakhang, a hilltop temple offering sweeping views of Thimphu Valley. Travel across the scenic Dochula Pass (3,100m), adorned with 108 chortens and offering spectacular Himalayan views. Descend into the lush Punakha Valley to explore Punakha Dzong, a 17th-century fortress at the confluence of the Phochhu and Mochhu rivers, regarded as Bhutan’s most beautiful dzong. Enjoy a short hike to Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kunley, and walk across the iconic Punakha Suspension Bridge. Embark on a long but scenic journey to Bumthang, Bhutan’s spiritual heartland. Your potential stop will be Pelale Pass – Another picturesque pass in central Bhutan, known for its sweeping vistas and serene environment. Travelers often stop here to admire the natural beauty, observe local flora and fauna, and enjoy the crisp mountain air. Yongtongla Pass – A scenic mountain pass offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and Himalayan peaks. It’s a popular stop for photography and short breaks while traveling between valleys, giving a taste of Bhutan’s high-altitude landscapes. Then visit Trongsa Dzong, the largest fortress in Bhutan, historically significant as the seat of power before unification. Continue to Bumthang, a valley rich in history and spirituality. Spend the day exploring Bumthang’s sacred sites. Jambay Lhakhang, built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, is among Bhutan’s oldest temples. Kurjey Lhakhang houses a rock imprint believed to be left by Guru Rinpoche during meditation. Tamshing Monastery is famed for its 16th-century murals, and Jakar Dzong, the “Castle of the White Bird,” dominates the valley with commanding views. Burning Lake (Membartsho) – A sacred site near Bumthang where Guru Rinpoche is said to have discovered hidden treasures (terma). The lake is surrounded by legends and is a peaceful, spiritual spot. Drive to the tranquil Phobjikha Valley, a U-shaped glacial valley at 3,000m. Visit Gangtey Monastery (Goemba), a 17th-century monastery that is the spiritual center of the region. The valley is also the winter home of the endangered black-necked cranes, which migrate from Tibet. A leisurely walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail offers serene landscapes and rural charm and visit crane center. Overnight in Phobjikha.
Return to Paro Valley (6–7 hrs drive). In the afternoon, explore Rinpung Dzong, the “Fortress of the Heap of Jewels,” showcasing classic Bhutanese architecture. The nearby National Museum (Ta Dzong), once a watchtower, now houses art, relics, and natural history collections. In the evening, stroll through Paro town, a lively mix of traditional and modern Bhutanese life. Overnight in Paro.
Hike to the legendary Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), perched dramatically on a cliff at 3,120m. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche meditated here in the 8th century after arriving on a flying tigress. In the afternoon, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, built in the 7th century and linked to Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. Optional visit to a farmhouse for a traditional hot stone bath and local hospitality. Overnight in Paro.
